Getting out of a rut and the snowball effect

It’s coming. Make no bones about it.

At some point in the next 3 months, one of these things will happen:

  • You’ll be at the beach or a party and want to be shirtless

  • Someone will ask you to join a game or event

  • One of the kids will challenge you to a race

  • You’ll look outside on a sunny day and think, “I’d love to go for a run right now”

But you won’t want to or won’t be able to.

It might be because of an injury. But have you actually tried to fix it? I’m not talking about the odd generic physio exercise that you dust off when things get really bad. I mean actually fixing it.

You might hide behind dad bod jokes or say you don’t have time right now. And maybe you don’t, but that’s usually because your health has slid down the priority list.

Here’s the truth…

The pain has to get bad enough before you decide to change. There's often a limbo stage, where your body feels a bit rough around the edges, or that niggle is annoying but not yet life limiting.

Eventually, you’ll reach a point where you know what you’re doing isn’t working. The exercises aren’t helping. The physio isn’t cutting it. Or maybe you just need some proper direction.

You’re not alone. This shows up in all walks of life, not just fitness.

Let me give you a personal example.

I live and breathe the fitness industry. I understand it. I enjoy training, reading about it, and helping others improve.

But that doesn’t mean I’m always in peak condition (more on that later).

What I don’t find easy is the business side of things. I’ve never worked in business before. And anyone who’s self employed will know: it’s often a loop of being overwhelmed for months, followed by a couple of calm weeks… then right back into it.

To manage that, I invest in mentorships every year based on what I need for the next phase. Sometimes I join when things feel calm, so I can take advantage. Sometimes I join when I’m overwhelmed because I need clarity.

Last week, I joined a new one because I felt like I was standing still. The pain of not moving forward finally tipped the scale. And while it’s early days, I’m already seeing a massive boost in productivity.

What’s more interesting? It’s spilling into everything.

One of the first tasks was to create a Trello board with daily, weekly, and monthly goals. It had clear start and finish times for sections like:

  • Business outcomes

  • Personal outcomes

  • Health and fitness

  • Fun

  • Who I need to contact

  • Tasks on the back burner

Super simple. But in just one week it’s helped me:

  • Get more done across business and marketing

  • Ask harder questions about how I spend my time

  • Exercise every day including rehab (getting back to peak condition)

  • Track my calories

  • Put my phone down by 7pm

  • Reconnect with old friends and clients

  • Be more productive in less time

This is the snowball effect from one task. Yeah, I could have done it myself, but I didn’t. And I wouldn’t have without structure and accountability.

I see the same thing with fitness.

Start training → eat better → sleep better → feel more energised for fun, work, and family → feel better in yourself overall.

It compounds.

You’ll feel proud shirtless, play paddle or go for a ride without worrying about pain, beat the kids in a race, and most importantly you’ll be the person you know you’re capable of being.

You can do this on your own. And if you’re already doing that, I’m genuinely buzzing for you.

But if you need help, I could have you:

  • Back in the gym in 2 days

  • Feeling better in 1 week

  • Feeling pretty damn good in 4

  • Feeling invincible in 8

  • Breaking PBs and chasing goals you thought were out of reach in 12

Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.

If you’re at that point or on the brink I offer all subscribers a free 30 minute programming audit.

In 30 minutes, you’ll walk away with an action plan tailored to you.

You can take it and run. Or we can discuss how I’d help implement it.

No fluff. Just value.
