The Passive Income of Fitness
Everyone wants to make money while they sleep. Let’s be honest, that is the dream ticket.
Make money with as little effort as possible. Do what you want, when you want, and not have to trade your time for it.
But even passive income usually needs a bit of work. Maybe you need to update your stock options to get a bigger return. Fix the boiler at your rental. Move your ISA into a better interest account.
That got me thinking.
What is the equivalent of passive income in training?
What actually helps you improve without even being in the gym?
I think it comes down to two things.
Sleep and nutrition
I am going to focus on nutrition here because I have just restarted tracking mine this week, and I have two new clients doing the same.
So why do I place so much value on it?
Let me give you a simple comparison.
Imagine you bought a car brand new, and gave it exactly what it needed every single day until the day you sold it.
You used the cleanest fuel. The best oil. Serviced it every year at the best garage. Changed the tyres when needed. Kept the brakes in perfect order.
What would that car be like when you sold it?
Now imagine your body got the same treatment.
What if every single day you gave it the fuel it needed to:
Power your life, your training, and your family responsibilities
Give your brain enough energy to perform at a high level
Strengthen your bones and muscles
Keep your body fat in check so inflammation stays low and hormones work properly
Keep your skin, hair, teeth, and eyes healthy
Fight off illness so you can perform day after day
Recover fully while you sleep
How would you feel? What would your results look like?
It would be unrecognisable.
So is this actually passive?
Well, it takes a little bit of work up front.
In week one, track your food and identify what is missing.
In week two, plug the gaps.
By week three, you should have it nailed. Just log it daily and hit your numbers. It should take ten minutes.
Passive enough?
What happens if you do it for six weeks?
Week one – Slight body shape change, more energy, better training capacity
Week two – Improved body composition, better sleep, better digestion, even more energy
Weeks three to six – These are the golden weeks. You look and feel different. Your training flies. Your gym and race scores improve. You recover faster. Your body looks sharper. Niggles calm down. Your partner notices. You start enjoying the process.
That is what three weeks of effort gets you.
And it is the same whether you are an elite runner, a weekend warrior, or just trying to feel better.
I have not met a single client whose nutrition could not be improved.
If you want to know how I actually do it, I wrote about that already. Give it a read:

Now, some of the things you will come up against:
You are probably not eating enough protein. This needs a mindset shift. It gets easier fast.
Your mates will think you are weird and will try to sabotage your efforts. Ignore them.
You can eat more than you think.
The belief that less is better is deeply embedded. But less is not better. Exact is better.
You will panic about carbs. Do not. Protein and calories are what matter most. Carbs and fats can be based on what you prefer.
The first two weeks will feel like effort. But when week three kicks in, you will want to keep going.
Eating like a normal person will start to feel odd. That is a good thing.
I am genuinely excited for my new clients to see what good nutrition does. If you feel like you are not where you want to be, this is your reminder.
Time to get back on it.
