Adventure doesn’t always come with a passport, sometimes it comes with a pair of goggles.
Last Friday I did a 10k swim in a beautiful part of Snowdonia called Barmouth, whilst one of my clients was away in Tuscany doing a 750km bike ride.
He messaged me when he finished to tell me two things:
1️⃣ His back and calves - the same areas he was worried about when we first started training - were absolutely fine.
2️⃣ He made lifelong memories.
I also made a lifelong memory.
And it got me thinking… Would I have ever seen Barmouth if I didn’t swim? Probably not. Would he have ever seen that much of Tuscany without cycling? I doubt it!
Then I asked myself - how would my wife respond if I said I was going to Barmouth for no reason? Or for a spa weekend?
Would she have been ok with that? Probably not.
When boozy weekends with the boys stop being appealing, fitness becomes the new vehicle for travel, adventure, and escape.
It gives you a reason to explore. A reason to get away. And an excuse your partner can actually get behind.
Doing something healthy is far more positive than a heavy weekend, and far more acceptable than doing nothing (which is completely wrong, but unfortunately true).
The 10k I swam was tide-assisted, so more like a 6k, but it didn’t feel hard - and I loved every minute of it. The scenery was incredible. The people were lovely. The whole experience was just… positive.
The reason it felt comfortable wasn’t luck. It was because I had a plan, stuck to it, and kept myself in good shape.
And it’s the same for my client in Tuscany.
He’s a fit guy, but he’s had lower back issues for years. For him to enjoy that trip, his back and calves needed to be ok- and they were. That came from having an individualised plan, staying accountable, and executing it.
Unfortunately, staying fit as you get older is different from when you were young (no matter how hard we fight it). It has to be more personalised. Your body’s done more work, clocked more miles, and had more injuries.
You can’t follow generic advice like:
“Don’t squat.”
“Don’t deadlift.”
“Just stretch more.”
“Stop running.”
Some of that might be valid for you. Most of it probably isn’t.
Some of my clients squat and deadlift. Some don’t. Some run. Some don’t. Some rehab shoulders. Others ankles.
You see what I’m getting at.
To get through Tuscany, my client needed a progressive plan to get his back and calves strong again. You might need something totally different... to achieve exactly the same goal.
If you feel like you aren’t hitting the heights you should be, and you’re ready to get back to a level of fitness you’re proud of, it starts with an expert plan.
